Why The Sun? My wife and I used to house sit for this wonderful, artsy older couple in Providence when we were in medical school. One day when we were at their house I noticed that they had years and years worth of this magazine called The Sun neatly organized by date on one of their many bookshelves. I was intrigued. I'd never heard of The Sun. And as I leafed through the random issue I selected first, I saw that it was a mixture of poetry, short stories, photography, interviews with interesting people, thought-provoking quotes relevant to the times, entertaining and somber little submissions from readers on a theme (my favorite part), and excerpts from previously published works (like books or pamphlets etc) that speak to the issue's theme. I was totally hooked. I loved the variety. Medical School at that point was so much rote memorization. So I loved that in reading The Sun I was learning, thinking, reflecting and using my whole brain again, as I had in college.
