“The story of your life is not your life. It is your story.”
I recently got a scholarship to attend the Physician Leadership Program put on annually by the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association. And this past Tuesday night our course was led by @zeitgeistmama (Jennifer Caleshu) who is an executive coach who facilitated a really nice discussion about communication as a leader.
She read us a quote from the novelist John Barth who wrote, “The story of your life is not your life. It is your story.”
For me that means that it is not that I’m from San Diego or that I’m multi-racial or that I went to Brown University for college and med school. It is not that I decided to specialize in family medicine. It’s not that I have 2 kids and a wife or that I’m a life coach for doctors. The facts of my life aren’t the things that make me who I am or determine how I show up in the world as a wife, a mom, a healer, a daughter, a sister, a friend, as a coach, a colleague, or a member of our community.
The things that determine the way I walk in the world are the beliefs I have about myself. The story I tell me about me. My running narrative. About who and what I value and where I find meaning. About my failures and what I’ve learned from them. The story about who I want to be, about where I want to go, what I want to do, and for whom.
I’d love to hear your narrative. About who you want to be, what you want to do, and for whom. That’s exactly what I do as a coach. And it brings me so much joy. Check out my 12 week program, My First 24, and let me know if you’re ready to become that person you want to be.
